Forest Friends.....

Hello World!

Sister #1 here.

Our family has been in creative mode for some time
since the purchase of our cabin a few months ago.

We've received such wonderful positive feedback from the remodeling/makeover pictures that we've been posting on
facebook & instagram
regarding the Bear Lake Ranch House
and it fills our buckets to the brim!

If your interested in following the progress.

Requests have been pouring in for tutorials and today we're honoring one of those requests by posting how we made our "Forest Friends" that are now affectionately located in Bedroom #1 of the Ranch House.

I knew that I wanted to incorporate some reclaimed wood into the room I was designing to give it a rustic flare and so I started searching for ideas and came across these wildlife silhouettes that was just what I was looking for!

The prices for these pieces ranged anywhere from $50-225 each.
"Whatev's" I thought to myself --- I can totally make these!

...and so I did.

I choose to do three "Forest Friend" designs and started out by measuring my wall space to determine the size of each wood square.

I decided on 18 x 18 wood squares with no frame would be perfect.    The more rustic the better.

I then laid out out my wood to determine how much I would need to make three 18 x 18 squares -- measure twice, cut once.

Giving each piece a little cut on the chop saw according to my measurements.

I then laid each piece out making three 18 x 18 squares.

We decided because of lack of time that we wouldn't glue them together and instead secure them by nailing thin wood strips to the backside with a nail gun....like so.

Nail gunning it! "Kapow!"  Making sure to hit twice on each seam for extra support.

 ...and wah lah!
{yes, this is my "wood working shop look"
cuz we're real like that!}

Once all three wood squares were finished it was time to lay out the designs.

Fortunately for me I have a very talented Mother who can draw just about anything and she was willing to share her talent with me and drafted up the silhouette sketches.
 .
She even named them....{it's so my Mom!}

I then cut out each "Forest Friend" silhouette and placed them where I liked them on each wood square...

...and secured with tape.

I then traced around each silhouette with white chalk.  Chalk can easily be wiped off with water after the paint has dried not leaving a trace!

I then proceeded to whitewash the silhouettes.  Using plenty of water with white paint until I got the right consistency.

 First coat...let dry.

2nd coat. Let Dry

Once each silhouette was dry, I took a sanding block and roughed it up a bit to bring out the wood grain.  This is definitely a personal preference of how much you sand off.

I then used a finishing wax to shine it up a bit and to bring out the darkening of the wood grain.  Really love this effect!!!

I then let it dry over night...and they were ready for placement at the cabin.

It was very exciting to see them come together and what a beautiful statement they make together in the placement of the room.

What do you think?

I personally am in LOVE!

Just to give you an idea of what the room looked like before.

See below

Yes, please do scroll back up and look a second time.  It's quite a transformation.

MORE TUTORIALS COMING SOON!!!

Have a most "Forest Friend" kind of day!

Love you Sisters!

It's for our good!!!

GOOD MORNING!

Romans 8:28

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are called according to his purpose."

My Dad has taught me this my whole life.  If things are hard, or tough or seem like we are being picked on..... If we LOVE THE LORD, every experience will be for our good.
EVERYONE!
Even the ones that seem like they couldn't be.
Every SINGLE ONE!
I have loved this scripture my life and this has become one of my most favorites.

I remember working with my Dad and my sisters at his apartments; cleaning, painting, dry wall, (yes we learned how to fix dry wall:), and we even learned how to use a
Jack hammer to tear up an old driveway.
I weighed about 80 pounds (wet:) and then my Dad says - "You can do it, Kim!" I was wondering who was going to win: me or the jack hammer.

My Dad has taught me many wonderful teachings throughout my life.
I love his visits in the car when we would drive to and from the apartments every Saturday.
I know at the time they probably annoyed me a little but now as I look back those things he shared - they have became a part of me...

He taught us that we had the power to become whoever we choose to be!
That nothing stood in out way but ourselves.
That we should have faith and trust in our Savior.
That if we worked hard enough we could achieve our best selves!
.
.
.
"I, Kimberly (and Keri and Kristi and Amie and Annie),
having been born of goodly parents,
therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father (and my mother)..."

Thank you Dad for all of your teachings.

And our sweet momma!
She was a great example of service.
She worked hard for our family.
Making our house a home...(that is no small task:!)
She sewed dresses for every holiday! EVERYONE! We all matched! ....seriously. We looked amazing.

She was a STALWART Visiting Teacher!
I don't think she ever missed a month.:)
She was always helping others in need...

I remember one Family Home Evening,
my Dad pulled us all together to let us know that we needed to help more around the house.
My mother sat there in tears.
I still remember feeling really bad that she was crying and yet I didn't understand why.
Oh BOY! I now know why!
Pick up your crap!

I remember so many FHE's that were fun and enjoyable!
We had a lesson and then off to play
volleyball, softball, kick ball. We had fun as a family.

Thank you Mom! You are a great example to us!
.
.
.
.
One thing that stands out about my parents is
Perseverance!
You work hard until you achieve it!

I look at our Cabin in Ovid, Idaho and it is exactly an accumulation of my parents teachings.
Families are Forever! God Loves us All! Work Hard! Play Together!

I hope when you come to our cabin, that you will feel of our love for family and God.
Because truly that is what life is all about!
Nothing else really matters....

These are just some thoughts this morning...
hope you have a beautiful day!
and remember
If we love the Lord - ALL things shall work together for our good!

A Different Kind of Sister Highlight...

Aren't teenagers great!
Just love them!!!

They have a lot to deal with .
I feel like the WORLD is constantly in their face..
Do this!
Be that!
Have this!
That is not easy....

I asked 5 beautiful girls about life... I wanted to know how they are dealing with the world around them and
what helps them to get through the day.

Where do they feel support?
How can help them?
What support can we give?

I asked 5 young women from the ages of 13 -18.
Their actually quite cute girls...
They might even be related...

It is interesting how they each have different struggles and different interests and yet there answers seem to be a common theme...

See what you think.

The first 2 darlings are from #2.
Meet Kell and Mollie

What is your full name?
Makael Britney Watts

What is your favorite treat?
Chocolate covered peanuts
What is your favorite color?
Light blue
What helps you get through a school day?
Knowing that eventually I can get home and see my family,
and that I can start a new day tomorrow!

Is is hard to be a righteous example?
It's hard to be a good example sometimes, depending on who you're hanging out with. But I love having seminary during the day, to kind of remind me of what's really important!

I like to ask myself....Will this matter in a month or a year?

How have you used social media for good?
I love posting about my family and church activities!
Tell us one of your unique talents?
I am very witty and think of jokes to tell my family all the time!
What is your favorite quote?

"Our Greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that fighters us.
We ask ourselves,
who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented, and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just is some; it is in everyone.
And, as we let our own light SHINE, we consciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
-Marianne Williamson

Tell us one person that inspires you and why?
My brother really inspires me!
He has completely turned his life around,
and he is so strong in his faith and testimony!

Love you sweet Kell!

My full name is Mollie Lorrin Watts.

My favorite treat is Cold Stone ice cream.

My favorite colors are black & white.

What helps me get through a school day is thinking of what I come home too. School is hard and it's hard to stand up for what you believe in or to block out the negatives. What helps me is making sure that I read my scriptures and say my prayers every night, and remember that God is always there.

If I'm having a hard day what helps me is music, and my family.

I've used social media for good just by not being negative, and always being the sweetest I can towards everyone.

One of my talents is to draw. I really enjoy drawing because I love creating things that haven't been created before and it lets me express myself. I also like to play the guitar, I just started a few months ago and I find it very beautiful and fun to mix chords together and see what ones sound good played together

My favorite quote is : "the key is to be a doer, not just a hearer; to be a light, not a judge of the darkness."

One person that inspires me is my mom because she isn't judgemental, she's so nice to everybody and has such a sweet spirit about her.

Love you sweet Mollie!

Now meet Tai from #3.
She is a true gem!

My name is Tai Walker Green- I'm #3's daughter.

I love ice cream, movies, and dogs.
My favorite color is blue, like a cornflower blue. Keri always makes fun of me because apparently "cornflower" is too specific. Haha!!

School is just one of those things that kinda sucks sometimes, but it's necessary! To get through school, i just have to do my work with the knowledge that it will help me in the future. Attitude is everything!!

Being an example isn't something that I think about much.. That's probably not the correct answer, but it's honest. Haha.. I think that if you just try your best to be fair and kind, then you're being a positive example. The quote that my family loves, by Marianne Williamson, says that, "as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same," and I believe that wholeheartedly.

When I'm having a hard day, or when I'm afraid or otherwise feeling unwell, I try to have an eternal perspective.by that I mean, just step outside of myself and my perspective for just a moment. Any pain or discomfort we feel will not last forever. You just have to trust that the sun will rise the next day and that the world isn't over!

Our lives are saturated with social media, and I just choose not to post or share anything that would make someone uncomfortable. I usually think about my family before I post anything. If my family would be disappointed in something I want to post, then I won't post it! "Don't do anything that would embarrass you, your team, or your family." (That's another Cuzin's Kamp nugget of knowledge.)

Everyone has unique talents! I can't fold into a pretzel like Kell probably can, but I am practically like a mini-IMDb. (I really like movies.) Also, I can write/balance a chemical equation and tell you all of the diatomic molecules.

My favorite quote: "We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses." -Abraham Lincoln

My mom inspires me. She's the strongest person I've ever known. She has created this whole life for us by herself and I admire her insanely strong determination. She hasn't let her trials make her bitter or hard, instead she has grown from them. She's also like the funniest person on earth.

WE LOVE YOU SWEET TAI!!!

Sister Scribble

We can talk to our Heavenly Father about anything.
Sometimes I just talk out loud to Him as I'm driving down the road.
He wants to hear about every Joy,
every Triumph,
every Sadness,
He even loves to laugh I think!!!

We don't realize how powerful our prayers can be.
I've tried to establish prayer as a daily part of my life.
Especially as my children get older and have multiple things to deal with,
one thing I know that I can do is PRAY for them.

He is there, and He is listening...

Be kind to yourself....

I stumbled across this saying last week and I haven't stopped thinking about it since....

I wanted to share it because we can be so hard on ourselves...I personally have been beating myself up for the last couple of weeks...so hard...and so mean!!
My goal since reading this is to do better to accept ME! STOP BEING SUCH A BULLY TO MYSELF.....Accept my flaws...be thankful for lessons learned...

**************

Dear Human: You've got it all wrong. You didn't come here to master unconditional love. That is where you came from and where you'll return. You came here to learn personal love. Universal love. Messy love. Sweaty love. Crazy love. Broken love. Whole love. Infused with divinity. Lived through the grace of stumbling. Demonstrated through the beauty of....messing up. Often. You didn't come here to be perfect. You already are. You came here to be gorgeously human. Flawed and fabulous. And then to rise again into remembering.

HUGS TIMES FIVE!!!
